Without a doubt, youth hostels offer the cheapest accommodation for the young traveller, most areas are covered, offering a wide choice and most belong to the UK Youth Hostel Association.

Youth hostels are great for meeting other low budget travellers from all over the world in the same age group, all sharing the facilities and working together during their stay. Most have bunk rooms with bunk beds or dormitory style accommodation.

Sometimes long stay visitors can actually work as cleaners or office staff booking people in or offering local information to new visitors, very helpful if your hundreds of miles away from home and it's your first visit to the Lake District. You could also look for backpacker accommodation.
