Ambleside Roman Fort (Galava) situated in Borrons Park Ambleside at the north end of Lake Windermere.
The original wood and soil fort was replaced by a stone building in the Hadrianic era, this fort had better walls, better roofs and windows with glass in them. During that time what is now known as Ambleside grew up outside the walls of the settlement.
Although this site remains undeveloped plenty of information can be obtained from the Armitt Library located in Ambleside. Artifacts and other findings from around the fort can be seen at the Kendal Museum of Natural History and Archaeology, here you can also see the tombstone of a records clerk who was killed in conflict.
