Hardknott Roman Fort (Mediobogdum) near Eskdale. The fort is located on the western side of Harknott Pass.

This pass is very narrow with sharp bends uphill and down dale it is very similar to Wrynose Pass and it is advised that if driving to this location care should be taken as the passes can be dangerous especially in winter.

This Roman fort remains one of the most outstanding auxiliary forts of the second century AD. Excellent views of the Lake District mountains looking over Eskdale, you can see the coast at Ravenglass.

Plenty of restoration work has been undertaken and certain features such as the bath houses, commander's house and gateways can be clearly seen.
