All Saints (Bolton) ( Churches )

The attractively situated twelth-century building is approached through rows of neatly clipped yews.

Beside the porch, which protects a decorated Norman doorway, are a tombstone with the skull and crossbones and a life-size effigy of a woman at prayer.

Above another former doorway in the north wall, a carved block of sandstone thought to date from 1115 shows two jousting knights. Inside, sculpted heads look down from the corbels supporting the roof timbers.

There is some interesting stained glass and wall-boards carrying the Lord's Prayer, the Creed and details of endowments.

Nearby another small church is that of St Cuthbert at Cliburn, 5km to the west. It has a lot of Norman work.
