St Andrew (Greystoke) ( Churches )

The foundation of this large church dates from at least 1255. Its history is closely linked with the Barons of Greystoke Castle (not open to visitors).

It was the fourteenth Baron who commissioned the building of the present church, which began in 1382 and continued into the fifteenth century.

It was also at his wish that the side walls were opened up to add three chapels or chantries on each side. THese were for the use of priests endowed by local benefactors. Until the Reformation, when the arrangement was discontinued, there was a "college" of fourteen men under a "master".

When the chantries were abandoned and their internal partitions removed, the nave became unusually wide.

As well as fine medieval glass in the restored east window and choir stalls with delightful misericords, there is much else of interest, including two alabaster effigies of knights in armour (the fourteenth and sixteenth Barons), and, from the twentieth century, a fine figure of the crucified Christ by the Lake District sculptress, Josephine da Vasconcellos.
