St James (Ormside) ( Churches )

A pleasant way to reach Great Ormside is to walk 3km from Appleby on the bank of the river Eden.

Otherwise leave the B6260 Orton road at Burrells. One of Cumbria's oldest churches stands high to the north of the village, close to Ormside Hall with its fourteenth-century pele tower, and looking towards a viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway.

A Viking sword and the Anglo-Saxon Ormside Cup, now in a museum at York, are amongst relics found in the churchyard.

A Roman altar and an ancient cross are built into the porch, whilst inside are massive Norman arches and a variety of interestin features including a fourteenth-century hagioscope or squint loop, simiar to another at Crosby Garrett.
