St James (Whitehaven) ( Churches )

Built in 1753, the church stands high looking down on to the town centre. The architect was Carlisle Spedding, a famous mining engineer.

Considerable internal remodelling was done in 1980. It remains a very fine Georgian church with galleries and solid pews.

The altarpiece at the east end is a painting by Procaccini of the Transfiguration.
