St Lawrence (Appleby-in-Westmorland) ( Churches )

The church stands at the lower end of Boroughgate beyond the cloisters which were  designed in 1811 by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of Lowther Castle, as replacements for older buildings.

The church tower has a Norman base; the nave is early fourteenth-century.

The church was twice badly damaged by fire during Scottish raids but was restored by Lady Anne Clifford in 1654. Her tomb is in the north aisle, close to that of her mother, Margaret, Countess of Cumberland.

The organ, which has a beautiful tone, is one of the oldest working organs in England. It was moved here from Carlisle Cathedral in 1684. In 1976 it was restored and reinstated in its original position.
