St Mary (Wreay) ( Churches )

This unusual church was built by local craftsmen. In 1840 Sarah Losh, who lived here, designed and paid for the church as a memorial to her sister and family.

Inspired by her travels abroad, she produced a highly original building. The windows are unusual, but is is the abundance of carvings of insects, animals and birds which are so striking.

The pulpit is made from hollow trunk of bogoak, with a palm tree alongside to hold a candle. The font was carved by Miss Losh herself and the work on the west door was by her gardener.
