A simple yet attractive church, much admired by Wordsworth, it has a lovely setting overlooking the village and surrounding countryside.
The present building dates from about 1500. Inside, massive pillars carry round arches. The plastered and whitened walls bear seventeenth-century decoration and texts which were restored and added to in 1875.
There is much evidence of the Sandys family, who live at nearby Graythwaite and who also founded the grammar school which stands below the church.
