St Michael (Barton) ( Churches )

The Church is beautifully situated near Tirril, just off the Penrith to Pooley Bridge (Ullswater) road.

It was the mother church for a wide medieval parish, hence such an unexpectedly large building in this quiet location. It is part Norman with a squat twelfth-century tower which has walls 1.5 metres thick.

The south aisle was built in 1250 and the north aisle in 1300. There was a general restoration in 1904. Arches through the tower walls join the nave and chancel, and the altar is beneath the barrel vault of the tower.

The appearance is most unusual, as though the altar were within a cave.
