The church has a pele tower built in 1181 almost entirely with stones from the Roman wall.
The tower walls are 2 metres thick with high narrow windows. Its lower chamber is entered from the church through a door with a strong iron grid.
A window on the south side depicts King Edward I, whose body was laid here after he died on the marsh nearby while leading his army against the Scots in 1307.
