St Michael (Torpenhow) ( Churches )

This is one of the few unspoilt twelfth-century churches and is well worth seeking out.

It was built very simply with an aisless nave and chancel separated by an arch. On one side of the latter are carved odd faces, including a hippopotamus and, on the other, a group of little men with linked arms.

The windows on the north side of the chancel are deeply splayed in typical early Norman style.

The painted nave ceiling has cupids and garlands; it was given in 1689 by Thomas Addison, brother of the more famous Joseph Addison. From the churchyard there are good views to the north.
