One of the finest old churches in Cumbria, according to tradition founded in the eighth century, it has been much latered over the years but has traces of Saxon and Norman work, as well as work from the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries.
The embattled tower is very early sixteenth-century. The interior is lofty and imposing, with some remarkable monuments. One, the "Bound Devil", may be pagan rather than Christian and shows the Norse Loki as in Gosforth Cross.
There are other ancient stones - relics of hogbacks, cross shafts and cross heads. THe cloisters, built in 1810 by George Gibson, give an attractive approach to the church from the market place.
