Sir Hugh Walpole ( Famous People )

Sir Hugh Walpole – Hugh Walpole was born in New Zealand in 1884 and came to England when he was 5 years old. He lived in the Lake District from 1924 until his death in 1941.

He bought Brackenburn, which overlooks Derwentwater in 1923. Walpole wrote a large number of books while living at Brackenburn, including The Herries Chronicle and 15 volumes of his diaries, which can be seen in the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery.

The Lake District was a prominent feature in all of his writings. Hugh Walpole died in 1941 and his grave is in St John’s Church in Keswick.
