The Lake District is also popular for the wide range of locally brewed beers and ales, with the art of brewing in Cumbria dating back hundreds of years. During the Middle Ages most people drank ale instead of the local water, as the water carried diseases and wasn’t purified.
Another popular ingredient in Cumbrian dishes is pork, even though the Cumberland breed of pig is extinct, recipes using pork, such as Cumberland Ham and Cumberland Sausages, still have connections with the region.
The Lake District in Cumbria is a fairly new county created in 1974 with the merger of the former counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire.
