Beers & Ales ( Food and Drink )

The Lake District is also popular for the wide range of locally brewed beers and ales, with the art of brewing in Cumbria dating back hundreds of years. During the Middle Ages most people drank ale instead of the local water, as the water carried diseases and wasn’t purified.

The main ingredients for making beer are barley malt, hops, water and yeast; with ale being brewed without hops. There are a large number of locally brewed beers and ales from a number of the different towns and villages in the Lake District. Some of the most popular beers and ales include Farmers Ale, Bluebird Bitter, Old Man Ale, Carlisle State Bitter, Cocker Hoop, Cumberland Ale, John Bewsher’s Best Bitter and Grasmoor Dark Ale.

In the past the Lake Districts ports were the centre of England’s rum trade, importing rum and Barbados sugar from the West Indies. Rum Nicky is a traditional Cumbrian rum and is made from a combination of brown sugar, dried fruit, rum and a variety of Cumbrian apples; like Forty Shilling, Carlisle Codling and Keswick Codling.

There are a number of traditional farmers’ market in a few of the villages throughout the Lake District, which are excellent places to buy some of the best locally produced fresh fruits and vegetables. At these markets you can buy all the ingredients you need to create the most delicious traditional Cumbrian dishes if you wish to try to recreate them for yourself. The most popular markets are the Penrith Farmers’ Market, the Carlisle Farmers’ Market and the Orton Farmers’ Market.
