Another popular ingredient in Cumbrian dishes is pork, even though the Cumberland breed of pig is extinct, recipes using pork, such as Cumberland Ham and Cumberland Sausages, still have connections with the region. Waberthwaite Cumberland Sausage is one of the most famous of dishes of Cumbria and is even served for dinner at Buckingham Palace.

Seafood is also very popular in the Lake District, with salmon being a popular choice for the past 2000 years in the days of the Romans. Salmon is the main ingredient in a number of excellent traditional Cumbrian dishes. Other world famous seafood found in the Lake District is the brown shrimp, which has been caught by local fishermen in Morecambe bay for hundreds of years.

Cumbrian cooking also uses a range of spices to create a range of taste sensations, with ginger; nutmeg; and pepper being the most popular spices used in traditional Cumbrian cuisine. Grasmere village in the heart of the Lake District is famous for its Gingerbread, with the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop using Sarah Nelson’s secret gingerbread recipe since 1855.
