The Lake District in Cumbria is a fairly new county created in 1974 with the merger of the former counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire.
This has caused the traditional Cumbrian cuisine to be a mixture of the culinary traditions of each former county. The wide variety of food in Cumbria has its origins dating back 100’s of years with a range of different influences. The mix of traditional Cumbrian cuisine and some modern ingredients, flavours and trends create the unique Cumbrian taste.
Lamb and mutton are a major part of a number of Cumbrian recipes, in particular the Herdwicks due to its unique taste. The hardy Herdwick sheep are reared on hill farms and moorlands all around the Lake District. Herdwick pate, smoked Herdwick meat and Herdwick burgers are some of the popular dishes made with Herdwick meat. Mutton has always been a popular food throughout Cumbria, but did go through a period of decline and is now making a come back.
