Brougham Castle ( Historic Places )

Brougham Castle – The remarkable ruins of this 13th century fortress are located on the banks of the Eamont River.

The oldest portion of the castle that remains standing today is the keep, with the lower three floors dating back to 1175.

The keep is open to the public and you can wander through the rooms freely, including the castle’s hall which is on the first floor. The lord’s chamber is on the second floor and it is in the chamber where Lady Anne died.

A souvenir shop is on the grounds, which sells a range of curios for tourists to take home. Near the castle there is an exhibition of Roman tombstones.
