Englands Lake District
Carlisle is
located on the site of the ancient Roman defence post of Luguvalium,
and after that the site was the British settlement of Caer Luel.
Carlisle Castle was built in 1092 and in the following centuries
became a strategic English fort during war with the Scots. Carlisle
was a booming commercial and handicraft centre during the middle
ages, and the city’s modern textile industry has its origin
from the late 18th century. The city is also the gateway to the
western stretch of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.
The Western Lake District is a beautiful mix of pebbly beaches,
secluded fishing villages and seaports. The area is largely untamed
and untouched with steep mountains and the serene valleys of Ennerdale
and Eskdale.
The Eden Valley is found on the peaceful eastern side of Cumbria,
with its landscape of rolling meadows and quiet villages giving
it a distinctive character and charm. The valley’s long history
offers a number of places worth discovering including castles and
historic homes, and Neolithic henges and stone circles. The valley
is surrounded by the North Pennines with its wild highlands, waterfalls
and many different species of wildlife. The North Pennines is the
first European Geopark in Britain and is a great place for bird
watching, hiking and horse riding.
