Boot ( Towns & Villages )

Boot – Boot is located in the valley of Eskdale at the bottom of Hardknott Pass, which is the steepest road in the Lake District.

This beautiful and charming village mostly consists of a few stone cottages, a farm, a few inns, a corn mill and a shop. Even though Boot is a small village it does have a wide range of accommodation and services on offer, which makes it an excellent base for exploring the valley.

Boot grew up with iron ore industry in the area with the discovery of iron ore in the fell side to the north. One the main attractions of Boot is Eskdale Mill, which dates back to 1578 and houses a permanent exhibition showing the techniques of milling grain.

Another sight worth visiting is St Catherine’s, the parish church which dates back to the 15th century and is situated by the river Esk.

A few miles to the east of the village on the summit of Hardknott pass lies Hardknott Castle, the ruins of the Roman fort Mediobogdum.
