Buttermere – This small village is located on the farming land between Buttermere Lake and Crummock Water.
Buttermere village has a few farms, two famous hotels, a few stone built houses, a small church and a school house that is now used as the village hall. There is also a youth hostel overlooking Buttermere Lake a couple of miles from the village.
The Church of St James was built in 1840 and is set on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village. The church houses a memorial to Alfred Wainwright on the sill of one of its windows.
The Bridge Hotel and the Fish Hotel were made famous by J Budsworth story, A Fortnight’ Ramble in the Lakes.
Buttermere village is a popular base with fell walkers, with both Buttermere Lake and Crummock Water having some of the best walking trails in the Lake District.
