Carlisle – This is the capital city of the county of Cumbria and it is situated to the far north of the county.
The town’s friendly and warm atmosphere is one of the reasons for its popularity amongst visitors to the Lake District.
Carlisle has a number of attractions on offer including the Cathedral dating back to 1133; Carlisle Castle initially built in 1092 and is now home to the King's Own Royal Border Regiment; the Tullie House Museum and Gallery, which exhibits the history of Carlisle; the Guild Hall Museum; the Victorian covered market; the old Town Hall; and Hadrian's Wall.
Carlisle is also one of the more modern towns in the Lake District and offers a wide range of shopping and entertainment.
