Kirkby Stephen – This lively market town is located at the top of the beautiful Eden Valley, and is surrounded by sum of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District.
Kirkby Stephen has had a market charter since the 14th century and still holds markets every Monday.
The town has a few buildings of historical and architectural importance, and its market square is lined by an ancient collar of cobble-stones.
The Cathedral of Dales, or the Parish Church St Stephen as it is officially known, stands on the site of an Anglo-Saxon church.
The church houses a number of interesting relics such as the Loki Stone, of which only two can be found in Europe.
Kirkby Stephen makes for a good base for walking trails through the beautiful landscape, with Alfred Wainwright’s coast to coast walk passing through the town, and the fells towards southern Lakeland.
