Pooley Bridge – This old fishing village is located on the Eamont River, at the northern point of Ullswater under Dunmallet Hill.
The village got its name from the Norse word for hill with a pool, ‘pooley’, with the Bridge part being added to its name at a later stage.
An Iron Age fort is located on Dunmallet Hill and has breathtaking views of Ullswater and the surrounding landscape. Pooley Bridge is a small village and has two main streets lined with old greystone houses, a few hotels, guest houses, tea rooms, tourist stores, a tourist information centre and the 19th century Church of St Paul’s.
There are a number of fishermen that still frequent the area due to the large amounts of Salmon and trout available. There are also a number of good walks starting at Pooley Bridge and explore the beautiful scenery around the village.
At Pooley Bridge Pier, you can take one of the Ullswater Steamers for a cruise around the lake, or for a trip to Howtown or Glenridding.
