Rydal ( Towns & Villages )

Rydal – This picturesque village surrounded by wooded fells is located between Ambleside and Grasmere.

Rydal is a sleepy Lakeland village and consists of a church, a few houses, a hall and the home of William Wordsworth, Rydal Mount. Rydal Mount is the village’s top attraction and was William Wordsworth’s home from 1813 till his death in 1850.

Open to the public, it contains furniture, portraits, personal possessions and first editions of his work. Another popular attraction in Rydal is St Mary’s Church, which was built in 1824.

Near the church is Dora’s Field, a piece of land William Wordsworth dedicated to his daughter, which is always open to the public and is owned by the National Trust.

There are a number of good walks around Rydal, one of the most popular is the walk along the south shore of Rydal Water to Grasmere.
