Sawrey ( Towns & Villages )

Sawrey – Sawrey is located along the eastern side of Esthwaite Water, a couple of miles from Hawkshead, under the woods and tarns of Claife Heights.

Sawrey is divided into two hamlets called Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey. Near Sawrey is world famous for the 17th century farmhouse Hill Top, which was where Beatrix Potter wrote most of her stories.

The Tower Bank Arms located next to Hill Top is the most popular pub in the village and is a great place to go for some excellent local beers and cuisine. Far Sawrey is located near the ferry point on Windermere; its main attraction is St Peter’s Church that dates back to the 19th century.

The Sawrey Arms is the village’s top pub and is popular with visitors to Far Sawrey. There are a number of excellent walks around Sawrey; the most popular are the walks in Grizedale Forest and Claife Heights.

Coniston Lake and Tarn Hows are situated fairly close to Sawrey and are easily reached by car.
